Why Should Ear-Piercing Be Done by a Medical Professional Instead of a Store Employee?

When it comes to ear-piercing, choosing a medical professional over a store employee can make a significant difference in terms of safety and overall experience. Here are some key reasons why:

Enhanced Safety and Hygiene

  1. Sterile Environment: Medical facilities adhere to strict hygiene protocols, ensuring a sterile environment that minimizes the risk of infections. Store settings, however, might not match these rigorous standards.
  2. Proper Equipment: Medical professionals use medical-grade materials and equipment specifically designed for safe ear-piercing, reducing the chance of complications.

Expertise and Training

  1. Medical Knowledge: Medical professionals are trained to understand human anatomy, which is crucial in avoiding nerve damage and ensuring correct placement of the piercing.
  2. Experience with Young Children: Professionals in a medical setting often have experience working with children, making the process smoother and less stressful for both the child and the parent.

Comprehensive Care

  1. Pre-Procedure Consultation: A medical professional can provide a thorough consultation prior to the procedure, addressing any concerns and ensuring the child is in good health for ear-piercing.
  2. Aftercare Guidance: Detailed aftercare instructions from a medical expert can help in proper healing and prevention of infections or other complications.

Peace of Mind

  1. Handling Emergencies: Should any immediate issues arise during the piercing, a medical professional is equipped to handle them promptly and efficiently.
  2. Vaccination Verification: Ensuring children are up-to-date with vaccinations can be crucial for their overall safety, and a medical professional can verify and require these records before proceeding.

Opting for ear-piercing by a medical professional rather than a store employee ensures a higher standard of care, safety, and expertise. This choice not only reduces the risk of infections and complications but also provides peace of mind for parents. For these reasons, it’s best to trust a medical professional with your child’s ear-piercing needs.

Are you making these after-care mistakes?

Do you know what to do as soon as you reach home? Do you know what not to do with your kid’s newly pierced ears?

One of the most common mistakes parents make is to touch their kids’ piercing without washing their hands first. This exposes their child to bacteria and the risk of infection.

Conversely, another mistake is using alcohol to clean the piercing spot. However, this causes a burning sensation and slows down healing as well.

There are a range of mistakes parents can unknowingly make with their kids’ ear piercing. This is why we at Omega Pediatrics always provide comprehensive aftercare instructions for parents. These include guidelines on how to use saline solution to clean the piercing area, how to spot an infected piercing, how to choose jewelry after the waiting period, and so much more.

How Long Should Initial Earrings Be Left In After Piercing?

After getting your ears pierced, it’s crucial to leave the initial earrings in place for a sufficient amount of time to ensure proper healing. Typically, the recommended period is six weeks. This timeframe allows the newly pierced holes to stabilize and reduces the risk of infection or complications.

Why Six Weeks?

  1. Healing Time: The six-week period gives your body enough time to form a new layer of skin inside the pierced holes, which is essential for healing.
  2. Preventing Infection: Removing the earrings too soon can increase the risk of bacteria entering the piercings, which can lead to infections.
  3. Stabilization: This period helps to ensure that the new holes will not close up immediately after removing the initial earrings.

Tips for Care During the Initial Six Weeks

  • Clean Regularly: Use a saline solution or an antiseptic to clean the area around the earrings twice daily.
  • Avoid Touching: Try not to touch or twist the earrings excessively, as this can introduce germs.
  • Watch for Allergies: Make sure the initial earrings are hypoallergenic, such as those made from surgical steel or titanium.

By adhering to this six-week guideline, you help ensure a smooth and risk-free healing process for your new piercings.

If you’re not sure how to proceed with piercing after-care, our pediatricians can help.

Not all ear piercings are equal

Contrary to what you may have heard, there are different types of piercings. They are named according to where they are placed in the ear: helix, conch, tragus, daith, rook, and more.

But the only one that we recommend for children is the earlobe type. It has the shortest healing period and is also the safest for tiny, sensitive ears. And since the lobe has no bone or cartilage, it is also the least painful of all piercing types.

What Are the Risks Associated with Ear-Piercing?

Ear piercing, although common, does come with certain risks. Here are the potential complications you should be aware of:

  • Infection: Anytime the skin is broken, there’s a chance for bacteria to enter and cause infection. Signs to watch for include redness, swelling, and discharge around the piercing site.
  • Scarring: Some individuals may develop scars as a natural part of the healing process. The extent of scarring can vary depending on skin type and aftercare practices.
  • Allergic Reactions: Jewelry made from certain metals can cause allergic reactions in some people. Nickel, for instance, is a common irritant. Opting for hypoallergenic materials like surgical steel or titanium can reduce this risk.
  • Keloid Formation: In rare cases, the body may overreact to the wound, leading to the formation of a keloid. This is an overgrown scar that extends beyond the initial piercing site and can be more difficult to treat. Those with a family history of keloids should be particularly cautious.

Before you decide to get an ear piercing, you’ll be required to sign an informed consent form. This is to ensure you’re fully aware of these potential risks and acknowledge them.

By understanding these possible complications, you can make an informed decision and take steps to minimize risks, such as choosing a reputable piercing professional and following proper aftercare guidelines.

What to do in case of piercing infections?

The symptoms of an infection include an extended period of redness and swelling, pus around the piercing area, prolonged pain, bleeding, and fever. If you suspect an infection in your kids’ ear piercing, take your kid to the doctor.

Although there are some over-the-counter solutions available, these could be harmful to kids’ sensitive skin. So it is recommended that you see one of our pediatricians to assess the infection and prescribe the right medication.

Best age for kids’ ear piercing

The guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (APA) don’t indicate the correct age for ear piercing. However, most pediatricians recommend avoiding newborn piercings, instead waiting until the child is old enough to understand instructions on how to take care of the pierced ear.

Based on this, Omega Pediatrics finds the age range of 2-10 years old most suitable. At 2 years old, kids should have already received tetanus vaccinations and the earlobe is still soft but not too delicate. Also, kids 10 years old and under are less prone to keloids — an unsightly overgrowth of scar tissue.

All in all, ear piercings are a personal decision. If you do decide to move forward with piercing at a young age, make sure to go to a professional who can perform it hygienically and correctly.
